Dental x-rays

The most common bone grafting procedure is a minor surgery that improves the bone density in the upper or lower jawbone to prepare for the placement of dental implants. Because dental implants require a stable base of support in order to be successful, this preliminary procedure is important for optimal patient outcomes.

When a tooth is lost, the jawbone that once supported the root is affected; it begins to break down and its minerals are transported to other areas of the body. Patients who have experienced bone loss in the jaw are not candidates for traditional dental implants, but bone grafting can remedy this by reversing bone loss or enhancing existing bone. After the bone graft has healed, dental implant surgery can move forward.

This type of bone grafting is a minor procedure, so it is typically performed in our office. Grafting material may be taken from your own bone, from another source, or it can be a synthetic material designed to generate the growth of bone. Healing time after bone grafts is usually between four to six months, although it can sometimes take longer.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bone Grafting

What is dental bone grafting?

Dental bone grafting is a procedure in which a grafting material is placed into the jawbone where bone has been lost. This material encourages the body to rebuild bone to strengthen the jaw.

How long does it take to recover from a dental bone graft?

The initial recovery from bone grafting is typically two weeks—in other words, after two weeks, the grafting site should start to feel normal again. It can take six months or more for the jawbone to regenerate, though.

Are you put to sleep for a dental bone graft?

Minor bone grafting is a simple procedure that doesn’t require IV sedation or general anesthesia, although you will be given local anesthesia to ensure your comfort. We provide anxiety relief with nitrous oxide and anti-anxiety medications.

Do dental implants always require bone grafts?

No, if you have not suffered any bone loss in the jaw, you will not need bone grafts. There are also some specialized types of dental implants that do not require as much support from the jawbone; you may be a candidate for one of these types of implants even if you’re not a candidate for a traditional dental implant procedure.

How painful is dental bone grafting?

Your bone grafting procedure is performed with local anesthetic, so you will not experience any pain during the procedure. As the anesthetic wears off, the discomfort is controlled or avoided with proper medication prescribed by Dr. Hartnett.
